If you put your ear to the street, you can hear the rhythms of the world in
motion. You may hear the sounds of celebration, heartache, self-doubt, struggle, or
pain. If you listen closer, you will hear something different, something special,
something you recognize but havent heard in a long time. That’s where you’ll find
the music of Big Maf.
Although born in Upstate, New York and raised in Brooklyn, Maf considers
New Jersey his home. His talent was identified when he was just a young teenager.
Listeners considered him “new” and “fresh” as he brought the skills of rapping and
singing into his repertoire. Maf’s groundwork to his career can be found on the
corners of Avon and Chancellor Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. This is where he
spent countless hours working his craft in lyrical combat against hopeful
contenders.
During high school, Maf began to expose himself to more avenues of success.
He participated and dominated numerous talent shows and Hip-Hop battles. Maf
quickly outgrew these amateur stages and worked his way to nightclubs in New
York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. It was during these shows that Maf gathered a
dedicated following. Throughout the tri-state area Big Maf became labeled as “the
hottest rapper with a reggae style flow”. The sounds coming from Big Maf’s songs
are a faultless blend of Hip-Hop, Reggae, singing, and rap. Digging deeper, listeners
can find influences from Haiti, as Maf uses touches from the jazzy, hip, party
anthems from the Kompa style of music. One of the qualities that sets Big Maf apart
from his peers is his seemingly effortlessness in crafting a memorable and melodic
song.
At just sixteen years old, Big Maf joined the Bronx label, Cutting Records, with his Rap/Reggae group named Culture Posse. Culture Posse’s single “For Real”
allowed them to tour around the United States. After the success of Culture Posse,
Big Maf decided it was time to go solo.
Now on his own, Maf made solid connections with Wyclef Jean, Lauren Hill,
and Prazwel from the Fugees fame. Big Maf and the Fugees gained much success,
even acquiring a primetime television appearance on the iconic show, Showtime at
the Apollo. Big Maf toured with the group and made a guest appearance on the
Fugees record setting album, The Score.
Maf now focuses completely on his abounding lyrical skill and his production
expertise to continue to offer unique music to his eagerly waiting audience. Maf is
currently living his dream everyday, making music that will potentially have an
impact on someone’s life. Maf is something different, yet something familiar. He’s
mastered the art of acknowledging old influences to create new ones. Maf will soonbe appealing to the masses as he works on his latest studio album. His style is
genuine, honest, and original: delivering records that will undoubtedly catch your
ear.
